Assault & Battery

Simple assault charges in Michigan are misdemeanor offenses resulting in around 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. If the assault results in an injury, the sentence goes up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. If the assault was committed against a person’s spouse or significant other, the sentence will increase. When someone takes assault to a completely unreasonable level, with the intent to cause serious bodily harm or maim the victim, the crime becomes a felony punishable with up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. If the victim of any assault is a police officer, the crime is a felony punishable with 2 years in prison and a $2,000 fine. If that police officer was seriously injured, the sentence can leave the assailant imprisoned for 15 years.
